Why is shipping a bare model.pkl file not enough to deploy a model?

What is the main reason deep learning container images are often 5 to 10 GB, and one effective way to shrink them?

The GPU stack (CUDA plus cuDNN plus full PyTorch) dominates the size; use CPU-only torch or export to ONNX when a GPU is not needed, CUDA, cuDNN, and a full PyTorch install can account for the majority of the image size. If the model serves acceptably on CPU, installing CPU-only torch or exporting to ONNX and serving with onnxruntime removes several GB from the serving image.
