Your e-commerce platform gets 100 requests per second at 2 AM and 10,000 at noon during a flash sale. If you provision for peak, you waste 99% of capacity overnight, burning money on idle servers. If you provision for average, your site crashes during the sale and you lose revenue. If you scale manually, someone has to watch dashboards 24/7 and react within minutes.
Auto-scaling solves this by adjusting capacity based on real-time metrics. More traffic? More pods. Less traffic? Fewer pods. CPU spiking? Add resources. Weekend? Scale down. No human in the loop.
But auto-scaling isn't one feature. offers four distinct auto-scaling mechanisms, each operating at a different level, and picking the wrong one (or combining them incorrectly) can cause thrashing, cost overruns, or scaling failures.
Shopify's Black Friday 2023: their Kubernetes clusters scaled from 2,000 to 12,000 pods in under 8 minutes to handle the traffic spike. The Cluster Autoscaler added 400 new nodes to accommodate the new pods. Total human intervention required: zero. The entire scale-out was triggered by HPA detecting elevated request .
