Most observability tools show you data and leave the diagnosis to you. Dynatrace's differentiator is Davis, an AI engine that automatically detects problems, determines root causes, and presents findings in plain language. Instead of "error rate increased," Davis says "the error rate for the checkout service increased because the payment-db host is experiencing high I/O wait due to a failing disk."
Dynatrace started as a browser-side monitoring tool in 2005, pivoted to full-stack APM, and evolved into an AI-driven observability platform. Their "OneAgent" technology is a single agent that automatically discovers and instruments everything on a host, application code, databases, processes, network connections, without configuration.
In large enterprise environments (banks, airlines, telcos), the automatic discovery and AI-powered root cause analysis save significant time. When a bank runs 5,000 services across 20,000 hosts, manual correlation is impossible. Dynatrace's Davis AI can navigate that complexity in seconds.
| Feature | Description |
|---|---|
| OneAgent | Single agent auto-discovers and instruments everything on a host |
| Smartscape | Real-time topology map of all dependencies, auto-updated |
| Davis AI | Causal AI engine for automatic root cause analysis |
| PurePath | End-to-end distributed trace with code-level detail |
| Grail | Unified data lakehouse for all observability data (logs, metrics, traces, events) |
| DQL | Dynatrace Query Language for exploring data across all signal types |
Dynatrace vs Datadog: Dynatrace excels at automatic root cause analysis and requires less manual dashboard configuration. Datadog excels at breadth of integrations and developer-centric UX. Dynatrace is generally more expensive but requires less engineering effort to operate.
The Grail data platform (introduced recently) is Dynatrace's answer to unified observability data, a single storage and query engine for all signal types, replacing the previous approach of separate storage for each data type. This enables cross-signal analytics that were previously difficult.
