In the early days of , you queried metrics via the Prometheus web UI, a functional but spartan interface. Then Grafana came along and turned those raw time series into beautiful, interactive dashboards that engineering teams actually wanted to look at.
Grafana is now the dominant open-source visualization platform for operational data. It connects to Prometheus, , Loki, Tempo, InfluxDB, CloudWatch, Datadog, and dozens of other data sources, all in one unified interface. Your metrics in Prometheus, your logs in Loki, and your traces in Tempo all appear in the same dashboard, with linked navigation between them.
What makes Grafana special isnt just pretty charts. Its the ability to correlate signals across data sources. Click a spike in a Prometheus metric, and Grafana can show you the related logs from Loki and traces from Tempo at that exact time. That cross-signal correlation is what transforms a charting tool into an observability platform.
| Feature | What It Does |
|---|---|
| Dashboards | Multi-panel layouts with time-series charts, gauges, tables, heatmaps, stat panels |
| Data sources | Connects to 100+ backends (Prometheus, Loki, Tempo, , CloudWatch, etc.) |
| Variables | Template variables that let you filter dashboards by service, environment, or region |
| Alerting | Define alert rules in Grafana that evaluate queries and notify via Slack, PagerDuty, email |
| Explore | Ad-hoc query mode for investigating issues without predefined dashboards |
| Annotations | Mark events (deployments, incidents) on time-series charts |
| Dashboard-as-code | Export dashboards as JSON, manage in Git, provision automatically |
The Grafana stack (LGTM):
This stack provides complete observability (metrics, logs, traces) using open-source tools, with Grafana as the unified frontend.
