New Relic was founded in 2008, years before Datadog, before , before the term "observability" entered the engineering vocabulary. They pioneered the concept of Application Performance Monitoring for web applications: install an agent, see your application's performance in real-time, identify slow transactions and database queries.
For a decade, New Relic was synonymous with APM. Then the observability space expanded, distributed tracing, infrastructure monitoring, log management, synthetic monitoring. New Relic responded by rebuilding their entire platform around a unified data model called "New Relic One" (now just "New Relic"), offering all observability data in a single platform with a -like query language called NRQL.
Their biggest differentiator in recent years: a generous free tier (100 GB/month of data ingest) and per-GB pricing rather than per-host, which makes New Relic significantly cheaper than Datadog for many team sizes.
NRQL (New Relic Query Language). A -like language for querying all telemetry data. You can write NRQL queries across metrics, logs, traces, and events using familiar SQL syntax.
SELECT average(duration) FROM Transaction
WHERE appName = 'checkout-service'

SINCE 1 hour ago
| Capability | Description |
|---|---|
| APM | Auto-instrumented distributed tracing and service maps |
| Infrastructure | Host, container, and monitoring |
| Logs | Centralized logging with NRQL search |
| Browser | RUM for frontend performance |
| Synthetics | Scripted browser and API checks |
| Alerts | AI-powered anomaly detection and alerting |
| Errors Inbox | Grouped error tracking with triage workflow |
Pricing model: New Relic charges per GB of data ingested (not per host) plus per full-platform user. The free tier includes 100 GB/month of data and 1 full user, generous enough for small teams and proof-of-concept evaluations.
