Why did the message 'Hi' cost 30 tokens through /api/chat but 1 token in raw mode?

The template added markers, role names and a default system message, The chat endpoint turns the messages into one text using the model's template. With no system message of your own, the template also adds the model's default one.

The same question was sent through /api/chat and as a hand-filled template in raw mode. What happened?

Both read 39 tokens and replied 'Tokyo', The chat endpoint only fills in the template and sends the text. The same text sent raw gives the same count and the same reply.

qwen2.5 was given a prompt in the Llama 3 template. Most first answers were right, but 0 of 20 replies were clean. Why?

It wrote Llama 3's end marker into every reply as ordinary text, To qwen2.5, is not a special token. It wrote it out as characters, so no reply passed the check; in 6 of 20 it also ran on past the answer.

An app sends no system message to qwen2.5 through the chat endpoint. What system message does the model see?

The default one from the model's files: 'You are Qwen, created by Alibaba Cloud. You are a helpful assistant.', The template uses the model's default system message whenever you do not send one. /api/show returns it.
