Best System Design Courses in 2026: 9 Options Compared

This is our course, so read this part knowing that. You get 770 lessons, about 287 hours, for one payment of $25 outside India or ₹1,111 in India, with lifetime access and every lesson added later. That is more lessons than any other option here that states a count (Educative's Grokking course lists 209, DesignGurus' Grokking course 82).

Each lesson is written, not filmed. Diagrams build step by step, the way a teacher draws on a whiteboard. Lessons end with a quiz, and some have code you can run in the browser. An AI tutor sits beside every lesson and answers from the lesson you are reading: it explains a part in simple English, draws it, quizzes you, or runs a mock interview.

Where it falls short: it is not free, and freeCodeCamp and Hello Interview's free breakdowns cost nothing. The self-paced course has no human coach, no mock interviews and no certificate (our separate live bootcamp has a teacher, mock interviews and a certificate, at a much higher fee). We are a smaller, newer site than ByteByteGo or Educative.

Best for: engineers who want one long course that runs from the basics to distributed systems, paid once. In India it is ₹1,111 once; the rupee prices we saw for the others started at ₹5,543 a year (Hello Interview Premium, seen from India on 7 October 2026).

ByteByteGo is run by Alex Xu, author of the System Design Interview books. It sells 8 courses, including System Design Interview, Object-Oriented Design Interview, Machine Learning System Design, Mobile System Design and Generative AI System Design.

Strengths: clear, well-drawn explanations of real systems, from authors whose books many engineers already know.

Price on 7 October 2026, as a US visitor saw it: $189 a year or $499 once for lifetime access, during a 50% off launch sale (list prices $399 and $999). Visitors in India saw ₹8,299 a year or ₹21,849 lifetime on 3 October.

Best for: engineers who learn well from illustrated case studies and want material from the System Design Interview authors.

DesignGurus runs the Grokking series on its own site. Grokking the System Design Interview has 82 lessons in 4 chapters, about 20 hours of study, 11 videos and 237 assessments.

Strengths: a pattern-based way to answer common interview questions, written in a direct, exam-focused style.

Price on 7 October 2026: $148 once for this course. DesignGurus also sells all-course plans, which were on a 60% off sale that day (yearly $149.20). The page showed different prices to a visitor in India.

Best for: candidates with an interview in the next two or three months who want a focused set of interview patterns.

Educative is a subscription platform for many subjects. Its system design course, Grokking Modern System Design Interview, has 209 lessons in 50 modules, 147 quizzes and 8 AI mock interviews. 78 lessons are free.

Strengths: code playgrounds inside lessons, and one subscription opens a large catalogue beyond system design.

Price on 7 October 2026: the Standard plan was $139 a year during a two-day 50% off sale (list $278). We did not find a lifetime plan on the plans page.

Best for: engineers who want system design and other subjects in one subscription.

Hello Interview is run by Evan King and Stefan Mai, former engineers at Meta. Much of its system design content is free, and it reads like a senior engineer walking you through a question.

Premium adds 31 system design items, 45 guided practice questions across system design and low-level design, videos and AI-guided practice. Its mock interview and mentorship programs ended on 31 May 2026.

Price on 7 October 2026: $78 a year, $47 a month or $275 lifetime, shown as discounts from $119, $59 and $399.

Best for: candidates a few weeks from an interview who know the basics and want targeted question breakdowns.

AlgoMaster Premium covers DSA, system design and low-level design courses, with guided practice and animations. The pricing page does not state how many lessons it has.

Price on 7 October 2026: $75 a year or $150 lifetime, shown as discounts from $100 and $250. Plans do not renew on their own.

Best for: candidates who want coding and design prep in one low-cost plan.

Codemia is a practice site: more than 120 system design problems and more than 70 object-oriented design problems, with editorial solutions and AI feedback on your answers.

Price on 7 October 2026: list prices $159 a year or $499 lifetime. A coupon running that day lowered both.

Best for: people who already know the theory and want many problems to practise on.

System Design School sells system design courses and practice questions with AI feedback, plus a free tier. Its pricing page does not state lesson counts.

Price on 7 October 2026: $45 a year or $99 lifetime during a 50% off offer (list $90.99 and $198).

Best for: a low yearly price with practice built in. (It is a different company from us, and from this site's name.)

freeCodeCamp publishes free system design material. Its course Learn Software System Design, by Hayk Simonyan, is a 2-hour video on servers, databases, scaling, load balancing, APIs and security. The Total Technology Zonne channel, which runs this site, also publishes free system design videos.

Where it falls short: you build your own path, and most videos have no quizzes or progress tracking.

Best for: anyone with no budget who wants a first, free overview.
