ByteByteGo System Design: an honest review and an alternative
The short answer
ByteByteGo is Alex Xu's learning site, from the author of the System Design Interview books. One plan opens 8 courses, including System Design Interview, Object-Oriented Design Interview, Machine Learning System Design and Generative AI System Design. On 4 November 2026 it cost $189 a year or $499 once for lifetime access in US prices, during a 50% off launch sale (list $399 and $999). It suits engineers who learn well from illustrated case studies and want the material from the System Design Interview books, plus coding, design and behavioural prep in one plan. Ours is the better pick if you want one long course from the basics up, paid once (770 lessons, ₹1,111 once in India or $25 once elsewhere); ByteByteGo is the better pick in the cases listed below, and we say which.
Our course, the System Design Masterclass: 770 lessons, about 287 hours, ₹1,111 once in India or $25 elsewhere, lifetime access.

Where ByteByteGo is stronger
- The diagrams are some of the clearest in the field, and the authors' books are widely read.
- One plan covers more than system design: coding patterns, object-oriented design, behavioural interviews, resume writing, mobile, ML and generative AI system design.
- Its case studies go deep on real systems such as Google Maps, a payment system and a stock exchange.
Pick ByteByteGo if you already know the basics, love detailed diagrams, and want coding, design and behavioural prep in one plan.
When ours is the better pick
- You want one long course that teaches system design from the basics, in order, with a quiz after each lesson.
- You want to pay much less, once. ByteByteGo's lowest US price on the day was $189 a year.
- You want an AI tutor that answers from the exact lesson you are reading, and diagrams that build step by step.
Where ours falls short
- It has no videos. Every lesson is written.
- The self-paced course has no human coach, no mock interviews and no certificate.
- It is a smaller, newer site, online since April 2026.
