Educative System Design: an honest review and an alternative

Educative is a subscription site with more than 2,400 courses. Its system design course, Grokking Modern System Design Interview, created by Fahim ul Haq, lists 220 lessons in 52 modules, 147 quizzes, 20 case studies worked end to end, 10 AI mock interviews and an AI tutor on every lesson. On 8 November 2026 it cost $149 a year for the Standard plan in US prices, during a 50% off sale (list $298). It suits engineers who want one subscription for system design and many other subjects, with quizzes, AI mock interviews and a certificate. Ours is the better pick if you want one long course from the basics up, paid once (770 lessons, ₹1,111 once in India or $25 once elsewhere); Educative's Grokking Modern System Design Interview is the better pick in the cases listed below, and we say which.

Where Educative's Grokking Modern System Design Interview is stronger
- One subscription opens more than 2,400 courses, including the other Grokking interview courses (coding patterns, API design, low-level design), so you can prepare for every round in one place.
- It builds 10 AI mock interviews with scoring rubrics into the course. We have an AI mock interviewer with a scorecard too, so mock practice alone does not separate the two.
- It gives a certificate of completion on every finished course. Ours does not.
- It is a large, well-known platform: the course page says 3.1 million developers have joined. It also has an AI tutor on every lesson, so the tutor alone is not a reason to pick ours over it.
Pick Educative if you want one subscription for system design and other subjects, with AI mock interviews and a certificate.
When ours is the better pick
- You only need system design and would rather pay once than keep a yearly subscription.
- You want a longer path in one course, from the basics to distributed systems, with the work topics interview courses skip, such as observability, security and DevOps.
- You want to start small and pay once: lifetime access, every later lesson included, and no renewal date to remember.
Where ours falls short
- It has no videos. Every lesson is written.
- The self-paced course has no human coach, no mock interviews and no certificate.
- It is a smaller, newer site, online since April 2026.

Is Educative worth it for system design?
If you will use more than one of its courses, it can be good value: Grokking Modern System Design Interview alone lists 220 lessons, 147 quizzes, 20 case studies and 10 AI mock interviews, and the same plan opens more than 2,400 other courses. On 8 November 2026 a US visitor saw the Standard plan at $149 a year during a 50% off sale (list $298). If you only want system design, a single course you pay for once can cost much less.
How much does Educative cost?
On 8 November 2026 the plans page showed, in US prices billed yearly during a 50% off sale: Standard $149 a year, Premium $199 and Premium Plus $249 (list $298, $398 and $498). Premium and Premium Plus add projects, more AI tutorials and monthly AI mock interviews.
Is Grokking on Educative the same as Grokking on DesignGurus?
No. Educative sells Grokking Modern System Design Interview inside its subscription. DesignGurus sells a different course, Grokking the System Design Interview, on its own site. Our Grokking the System Design Interview page covers the DesignGurus one.
Can I try Educative's system design course for free?
Yes, in part. On 8 November 2026 the course outline included a module called Free System Design Lessons with 14 lessons, and the page offered a free lesson to start.
What is a good alternative to Educative for system design?
