- Is system design asked for SDE-2?
- Usually, yes. Amazon's SDE II prep page says "Expect at least one question on software systems design", and its online assessment includes 20 minutes of systems design scenarios. Other companies vary, so ask your recruiter which rounds your loop has.
- How is an SDE-2 design round different from a senior one?
- In our view, an SDE-2 answer is one complete, working design with numbers, a data model and one good deep dive. A senior answer also compares several designs, covers many failure modes, cost and how to migrate. Companies set their own bar, so use this as a guide.
- What are common SDE-2 system design interview questions?
- The classic problems come up most: URL shortener, rate limiter, notification service, chat app, news feed, file storage, ride sharing and payments. Each one has a full walkthrough in our interview guides, and the 90-day plan above links the main ones.
- How long does it take to prepare for an SDE-2 system design round?
- Our plan is 90 days at about 8 to 10 hours a week, for someone who already works as a backend engineer. If you already know caching, queues and databases well, you can skip most of the first month.
- Do I need to know Kubernetes or microservices for SDE-2?
- Not in depth. You should know why you would split a service and what it costs, and how a load balancer spreads traffic. Deep platform knowledge is rarely the focus of an SDE-2 design round.
- Is low-level design (LLD) asked at SDE-2?
- At some companies, yes: a round where you design classes for a parking lot or a library system. It is a different skill from system design. Our LLD guides cover the common ones.
- I am a backend developer. Will I get different questions?
- Usually the same backend-flavoured problems. Your advantage is real experience, so use it: when you choose a database or a queue, say what you have seen go wrong with it at work.
