- What does forward deployed engineer mean?
- Forward deployed means the engineer is placed with the customer, not back at headquarters. A forward deployed engineer writes real code inside one customer's systems so the company's product solves that customer's problem. Palantir, which created the role, describes the focus as "one customer, many capabilities".
- Is a forward deployed engineer a software engineer?
- Yes. Every posting we read asks for real coding. Palantir says this role does "significantly more engineering and technical work than a consultant". The difference from a product engineer is who you build for: one customer at a time, instead of one feature for everyone.
- Forward deployed engineer vs solutions engineer: what is the difference?
- A solutions engineer usually helps win the sale: demos, answers and small proofs of concept. A forward deployed engineer usually builds and ships the real system after the customer has signed, and stays until it works in production. Titles differ between companies, so read the posting.
- How much does a forward deployed engineer earn in the US?
- Published ranges in live US postings on 22 October 2026 ran from $135,000 to $200,000 a year at Palantir (salary only), $185K to $325K at OpenAI, $189K to $330K at Ramp, and $280,000 to $320,000 for a staff role at Anthropic. Levels.fyi showed a median total yearly pay of $220,000 across 160 US reports on the same day. The table on this page lists each source.
- What is the forward deployed engineer salary in India?
- There is very little public data. On 22 October 2026 Levels.fyi showed a median of ₹17,56,635 a year for forward deployed engineers in India, from only 11 reports, which is too few to trust much. Databricks had live FDE roles in Bengaluru and remote in India, but those postings did not publish a range.
- How do I become a forward deployed engineer?
- Get good at everyday coding, SQL and APIs first. Then learn integrations, data pipelines and, for AI companies, RAG, agents and evals. Build two or three projects that solve a real person's problem end to end, and practise explaining them. Many postings also ask for customer-facing experience, so any client work, support or consulting helps. The 12-week roadmap above shows the order.
- How do I become a forward deployed AI engineer?
- Follow the same path, and spend more time on weeks 6 to 11 of the roadmap: RAG, agents, evals, security and running models in production. Anthropic's staff FDE posting says "You don't need to have shipped agents to production", so strong engineering plus clear AI basics can be enough to apply.
- Is there a forward deployed engineer course or certification?
- None of the postings we read asked for a certification. They ask for shipped work and customer experience. A course helps when it teaches the skills in the right order and makes you build things. Our AI Engineering course covers the AI half of the roadmap, and the System Design course covers integration, data and design.
- Do forward deployed engineers travel?
- Usually, yes. In the postings we read on 22 October 2026: Databricks said 20% of the time, Anthropic 25%, Salesforce about 25%, Palantir up to 25%, Glean 25% to 50%, Scale AI 25% and up to 50% when needed, and OpenAI up to 50%.
- Are there remote forward deployed engineer jobs?
- A few. On 22 October 2026 Glean listed a founding FDE role as remote in the US, and Databricks listed FDE roles as remote in India. Most roles are tied to a city because of customer visits.
- Is forward deployed engineer a good career?
- It suits people who like variety, customers and shipping fast. You see many real problems and learn a business quickly. The costs are travel, context switching and less time on deep product work. Demand is real: we counted 236 open postings with "Forward Deployed" in the title at just nine companies on 22 October 2026.
