What Codex is in 2026
“Codex is an AI agent that helps you write, review, and ship code.”
The name Codex has meant two things. In 2021 it was an OpenAI model that turned plain English into code, offered through OpenAI's API (the way programs call OpenAI's models over the internet). OpenAI's own page says "The OpenAI Codex models were deprecated in March 2023."
In April 2025 OpenAI launched Codex CLI, an open-source coding agent that runs on your computer, and in May 2025 a cloud version. Today OpenAI's help page describes Codex in one line: "Codex is an AI agent that helps you write, review, and ship code."
A coding agent does more than suggest code. You give it a task in plain words. It reads your files, runs commands such as tests, edits files, and checks the result, again and again, until it thinks the task is done. A model, the AI that writes the text and code, decides each step. Codex is the program around the model that runs those steps and limits what they can touch.
The models behind Codex change often. The docs, read on 6 October 2026, recommend GPT-6.1 Sol for complex work and GPT-6 Luna for focused, repeatable tasks. GPT-6.1 Sol arrived in Codex on 29 September 2026. Some news still mentions GPT-5.3-Codex-Spark, the fast model announced in February 2026. OpenAI's models page says it was retired on 14 September 2026.
